RIP ircd
I setup an IRC daemon today and had it ripped away from me.
Today I setup an IRC daemon on my server. I configured it and installed services for it as well (NickServ, Chanserv, OperServ, etc.) It was glorious. While I was waiting for the domain to propogate, I got a notice from the server admins saying that IRC-related processes were strictly forbidden, and that I would have to kill the processes relating to my daemon and services.
So I did.
[forint]$ kill 8168
[forint]$ kill 14227
[forint]$ exit
I am really bummed now. I spent hours today setting it up, configuring services, learning about binds and how the guts of IRC worked. And now, it's gone. I was in the middle of writing up a webpanel so that my less than savvy friend could update the MOTD as a favor to me. That project is gone, and no too is the IRC daemon.
But at least I did it. I can say I setup an IRC server, running on a shared host, with services. I could do it again in a fraction of the time - I've learned so much today. I registered my nick with NickServ. I registered our channels, #youthoftomorrow, #yot, and #molo with ChanServ. I even chatted a bit with Chelsea.
Of course, we don't need our own IRC server. In that same vein, I don't need Vietnamese Imperial Eggrolls. But damnit, if it wasn't sweet while it lasted.
P.S. You can find my idling on irc.esper.net in #youthoftomorrow, #yot, or #molo.
